Did you know? Lots of people get COVID but fortunately, only a very small percentage experience severe symptoms. While there is no guarantee that you won’t get COVID, there are four proven effective supplements you can take to help prevent it, or, if you get it, to experience only mild symptoms
1. Vitamin D to Help Fight Covid
Recent studies show that nine out of 10 COVID-19 deaths could possibly be prevented if people had adequate Vitamin D levels. In September 2020 Dr. Michael F. Holick of the Boston University School of Medicine published a study which found that a sufficient amount of vitamin D can reduce the risk of catching coronavirus by 54 percent. Also, patients older than 40 years who were vitamin D sufficient were 51.5 percent less likely to die from the infection compared to patients who were vitamin D deficient or insufficient.
If you could be outside in the fresh air and sunshine at least 20 minutes a day your body would likely be able to manufacture sufficient Vitamin D on its own to help keep you safe from infection. Unfortunately, winter with its reduced sun intensity and shorter days makes this difficult to do, so you will probably need to increase your intake of Vitamin D to make up the shortfall.
Dr. Peter Osborne of Origins Healthcare says, “Vitamin D is very inexpensive. You can buy it at the local nutrition store, and it might just save your life, should you get sick. With vitamin D, there’s a therapy that can be done that I recommend, and it’s 1000 international units (IU) of vitamin D per pound. So if you’re 100 pounds, you would take 100,000 international units of vitamin D for three days. After that, you don’t have to keep taking those higher doses, but three days of high dose vitamin D will elevate your serum vitamin D levels to adequate levels,” states Dr. Osborne.
2. Vitamin C to Help Fight Covid
Most people already know that taking Vitamin C helps to strengthen their immune systems. In addition, many physicians through the decades have successfully used high-dose vitamin C to treat diseases, including viruses. While we generally get enough Vitamin C from eating fruits and vegetables, it doesn’t hurt to get additional Vitamin C through supplements, especially during the cold months when viruses like COVID are most active.
3. Zinc to Help Fight Covid
Zinc helps prevent viruses from entering your cells, hijacking your DNA and replicating. Most adults need eight to 11 milligrams (mg) of zinc a day. Since meat, poultry and shellfish provide the highest levels of zinc, followed by beans, nuts, whole grains, and dairy products, vegetarians and vegans may especially need supplemental zinc to help fight COVID.
4. Quercetin to Help Fight Covid
Best known for its benefits as a respiratory health builder and energy booster, this super flavonoid plays a vital role in fighting COVID by opening up the cells in your body so that zinc can get inside your cells, where it works. You’ll find lots of it in pomegranate juice and green tea but if you’re not into drinking these every day you’ll definitely want to add quercetin as a daily supplement.
To your health!
